Chainsaw Will Not Start

• No power or fuel: For electric models, check the outlet, extension cord, plug, and switch. For gas models, check fresh fuel, fuel lines, primer bulb, and choke setting.
• Incorrect starting procedure: Follow the cold-start or warm-start instructions shown in the model-specific manual.
• Spark plug problem: On gas models, inspect the spark plug for fouling, carbon buildup, wet fuel, loose boot, cracked porcelain, or incorrect gap.
• Safety lockout not pressed: For electric and cordless models, press the lockout control before squeezing the trigger.
• Flooded engine: Move the choke to the correct position, follow the manual's flooded-engine procedure, and avoid repeated priming.

Corded Electric Chainsaw Will Not Run

• No outlet power: Check the wall outlet, outdoor receptacle, breaker, GFCI outlet, and extension cord connection.
• Extension cord not rated correctly: Use an outdoor-rated extension cord with the correct gauge and length for the chainsaw.
• Cord connection loose: Make sure the plug and extension cord connection are fully seated and secured with the cord retainer if provided.
• GFCI tripped: Reset the GFCI after checking that the cord, plug, and chainsaw are dry and undamaged.
• Motor overloaded: Let the tool cool, sharpen the chain, reduce cutting pressure, and clear chips or debris from the bar and sprocket area.

Gas Chainsaw Starts but Runs Rough or Stalls

• Fuel is old or contaminated: Drain stale fuel and refill with fresh properly mixed fuel recommended for your Homelite chainsaw.
• Dirty air filter: Clean or replace the air filter if it is clogged with sawdust, dirt, oil residue, or fine debris.
• Carburetor dirty: Varnish deposits, blocked jets, or restricted fuel passages can cause surging, hesitation, or stalling.
• Fuel filter restricted: Inspect the in-tank fuel filter and fuel line for blockage, cracks, or deterioration.
• Muffler or spark arrestor clogged: Clean the spark arrestor screen if power drops or the engine will not accelerate normally.

Battery and Charging Problems

• Battery will not charge: Check the wall outlet, charger, battery contacts, battery temperature, and charger indicator lights.
• Battery not seated correctly: Remove and reinstall the battery until it locks securely into the tool.
• Short runtime: Fully charge the battery, sharpen the chain, reduce cutting load, and avoid forcing the saw through thick or hard wood.
• Battery becomes hot: Stop cutting, remove the battery, and allow it to cool before charging or continuing work.
• Wrong battery or charger: Use only compatible battery packs and chargers specified for your Homelite chainsaw model.

Chainsaw Starts but Chain Does Not Move

• Chain brake engaged: Pull the front hand guard back toward the handle to release the chain brake before cutting if your model includes one.
• Chain tension too tight: Adjust the chain so it moves freely around the bar while still fitting securely in the bar groove.
• Bar and chain jammed: Disconnect power or stop the engine, then clear wood chips, sawdust, dirt, or debris from the bar, sprocket, and chain path.
• Clutch area jammed: On gas models, remove the clutch cover and clean debris from around the clutch, sprocket, and side cover.
• Chain installed incorrectly: Confirm the cutting teeth face forward on the top side of the guide bar.

Chain Will Not Cut Properly

• Chain is dull: Sharpen or replace the chain if it produces fine dust instead of chips or requires heavy pressure to cut.
• Chain installed backward: Reinstall the chain so the cutters face forward on the top of the guide bar.
• Wrong chain type: Use a chain with the correct pitch, gauge, and drive-link count specified for the bar and sprocket.
• Depth gauges too high: File the depth gauges according to the chain specifications if the chain cuts slowly after sharpening.
• Guide bar worn: Inspect the bar rails, bar groove, nose sprocket, and oil holes for wear, burrs, or blockage.

Chain Comes Loose or Jumps Off

• Chain tension incorrect: Adjust chain tension before use and recheck after the first few cuts with a new chain.
• Side cover or bar nut loose: Tighten the side cover, chain tension knob, or guide bar nut securely after adjusting chain tension.
• Drive links damaged: Inspect chain drive links for burrs, bending, cracking, or damage after derailment.
• Guide bar worn: Replace the guide bar if the rails are spread, uneven, pinched, or badly worn.
• Sprocket worn: Replace a worn drive sprocket that no longer supports the chain correctly.

Bar and Chain Oiling Problems

• Oil tank empty: Fill the oil tank with proper bar and chain oil before cutting.
• Oil hole blocked: Clean the guide bar oil hole, bar groove, and oil outlet area behind the bar.
• Wrong oil viscosity: Use suitable bar and chain oil for the temperature and cutting conditions.
• Oil cap not sealed: Check the oil cap, gasket, tank opening, and venting area for leaks or poor sealing.
• Oil flow reduced: Clean sawdust buildup from the side cover, oil outlet, bar pad, sprocket area, and chain groove.

Homelite Super 2 and XL Chainsaw Problems

• Hard starting: Check fuel freshness, spark plug condition, air filter cleanliness, primer function, and carburetor adjustment.
• Excessive smoke: Confirm the correct two-cycle oil ratio and inspect for old fuel, clogged air filter, or carburetor issues.
• Engine loses power: Clean the air filter, inspect the fuel filter, check the spark arrestor, and verify chain sharpness.
• Idle chain movement: Adjust idle speed according to the manual or inspect the clutch if the chain continues moving at idle.
• Oil leaks during storage: Check the oil cap, oil tank, pump area, and storage position. Some minor seepage can occur on older saws.

Homelite Pole Saw Problems

• Pole sections feel loose: Stop using the tool and check extension locks, collars, couplers, clamps, and shaft alignment.
• Pole saw difficult to control: Use both hands, maintain stable footing, and avoid overreaching or cutting directly overhead.
• Branch pinches the bar: Use proper relief cuts and do not twist the saw while the chain is in the cut.
• Chain stops in the cut: Disconnect power, clear the bar carefully, sharpen the chain, and reduce cutting pressure.
• Cut is rough: Replace or sharpen the chain and confirm the correct chain direction and tension.

Noise, Vibration and Cutting Performance Problems

• Excessive vibration: Inspect the chain, guide bar, drive sprocket, clutch, side cover, bar nuts, and chain tension.
• Rattling noise: Check the side cover, bar nut, chain catcher, handle hardware, muffler fasteners, and pole saw joints.
• Burning smell: Stop cutting and check chain sharpness, chain tension, bar lubrication, clutch slipping, motor overload, and cutting pressure.
• Saw pulls to one side: Sharpen cutters evenly and inspect the guide bar rails for uneven wear.
• Bar overheats: Check oil flow, bar groove cleanliness, chain tension, chain sharpness, and cutting technique.

Fuel, Storage and Maintenance Tips

• Use fresh fuel: For gas models, mix only the amount of two-stroke fuel you can use within a reasonable period and follow the fuel recommendations in the manual.
• Remove power before service: For electric and cordless models, unplug the tool or remove the battery before adjusting or cleaning the bar and chain.
• Check chain tension: Inspect chain tension before each use and after the first few cuts with a new chain.
• Clean after use: Remove sawdust from the side cover, sprocket area, bar groove, oil outlet, chain brake area, cooling vents, and pole saw joints.
• Prepare for storage: Empty or stabilize fuel where applicable, disconnect power, clean the saw, lubricate the bar and chain, cover the bar, and store in a dry location.

Safety note: Always stop the engine, unplug the chainsaw, or remove the battery before adjusting chain tension, replacing the chain, cleaning the bar, or performing maintenance. Engage the chain brake where equipped, wait for the chain to stop completely, and wear proper protective equipment.
